Walter Jehne, a soil scientist from Australia, has given humanity an incredible gift. He has given us what Buckminster Fuller called the, "Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth." He distilled a lifetime of work into a succinct and easy-to-read article, Regenerate Earth, in which he describes how we can practically drawdown the annual deficit of 20 billion tonnes of carbon back into soils, to rehydrate Earth's biosphere and safely cool the climate. For example, if 50% of grazing lands were better managed, that could drawdown 9 billion tonnes of carbon per hectare per annum, which represents 45% of the annual carbon deficit. Additionally, ecological grazing strategies can reduce the amount of fuel for rangeland wildfires, potentially reducing the release of another 8 billion tonnes of carbon per hectare per annum. That's 17 billion tonnes of carbon right there, just from better grazing! Plus, he gives plenty of other practical ways to drawdown carbon. Walter Jehne, former CSIRO Climate Scientist and Microbiologist, and co-founder of Regenerate Earth, explains the role of water in climate change and climate mitigation at an intensive workshop at Lake Morey Resort in Vermont, USA. Water in its many forms regulates our planet's ability to cool itself, and it keeps us from freezing, yet early climate models did not include it adequately because 1) it was considered too hard to model and 2) it was not considered possible for humans to influence. We understand that the health and regeneration of soil ecosystems, and by extension the plant and animal communities with which they are interdependent, are critical to the sequestration of carbon and foundational to any successful efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change. But there is a vital part of the story of soil regeneration and global climate mitigation that hasn't been as well covered as the carbon cycle – and that is the global water cycle. Walter will explore how soil biology controls the water cycle, and how the water cycle regulates the planet's heating and cooling processes. He will provide a deep look at the intersection of soil regeneration practices and the restoration of hydrological processes.
