MAMMOTH has been released by InterGrain as a very slow spring-maturity APW wheat variety.

InterGrain wheat breeder David Tabah said Mammoth’s unique phenology and high yield potential are set to offer an excellent variety option for very early sowing and early break scenarios in medium-high rainfall regions.

“Trialled as IGW6755, Mammoth has stood out in our breeding program as it has shown very stable yield performance and flexibility in maturity across different seasons and environments compared to quick mid-winter wheats,” Dr Tabah said.

“Mammoth is a versatile wheat variety to have in the silo and use when there is an opportunity to sow early in an early break scenario.

“Its ideal sowing window is from late March to mid April, with its maturity sitting slightly quicker than Illabo.”

Unlike winter wheats, Mammoth does not have a vernalisation requirement for cold temperatures to trigger flowering, so it can continue to develop using day length as the main trigger for flowering.

“This attribute allows Mammoth to respond to seasonal conditions and minimise frost risk.

“We have seen Mammoth exhibit flexibility in its phenology, and further testing is under way to gain a deeper understanding about how Mammoth responds to environmental conditions.”

Over the past two seasons, InterGrain has entered Mammoth into a number of external-partner trials, including the Western Australian Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s sowing time response series.

In 2022 and 2023, Mammoth demonstrated a very stable yield performance when sown in its ideal sowing window compared to quick winter wheat Illabo, showing its potential for autumn-rainfall sowing opportunities.

Mammoth has a good all-round disease resistance profile including provisional ratings of MR-MS for stripe rust’s WA pathotype, and for yellow spot.

Mammoth is classified as APW in the Western and Southern zones.

It has adequate grain quality attributes, but can have a smaller grain size and, if sown outside its optimum sowing window, may produce higher levels of screenings.

Mammoth is available for the 2025 season from InterGrain Seedclub Members and resellers.
